PROJECT ACTIVITIES

PART I: FIELD OPERATION

1     OVERVIEW

The Introducing PVC Handpump - Thailand Project was implemented by the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) in three provinces of Northeastern Thailand, known to be the most populous, driest and poorest region of the country. With financial support from IDRC, PDA has been able to promote the PVC handpump for the past two years and ten months with considerable results, the subject of this report. Because the first two years of project activities were reported in the first two project progress reports, this document will emphasize the last ten months of the project and the conclusions drawn by PDA from the project as a whole.

The details of the implementation strategy of this project was discussed at length in the project proposal submitted to IDRC in November 1982 and the two subsequent project progress reports. The project introduced 40 handpumps on shallow and deep wells as a source of clean drinking water to the villagers of Mahasarakham, Khon Kaen and Buriram provinces. A variety of pumps were installed under varying ownership schemes to determine the appropriate handpump for private and public use in the village setting.
