About the IDRC Library

The Research Information Management Service (RIMS) combines the Research Library and Corporate Records activities of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

IDRC has a corporate mandate to facilitate research that enhances the lives of people in the developing regions of the world. Within this mandate, RIMS information specialists deliver information to support IDRC's six major program areas: Biodiversity Conservation; Equity in Natural Resource Use; Food Security; Information and Communication; Strategies and Policies for Healthy Societies; and Sustainable Employment. Information services are also provided to the management of the Centre.

Primary clients of the library service are IDRC staff in the Ottawa Headquarters and seven Regional Offices; IDRC project staff; and the development research communities in Canada and abroad.

 Databases

The IDRC Library provides public access to development information via three databases.
BIBLIO: a database describing all items in the IDRC Library collection of research materials.

IDRIS: The IDRC Development Research Information System: a database containing information on activities in all fields of development research funded by the IDRC since its inception in 1970.

CNAF: a database of authority information on corporate authors used in IDRC bibliographic records.

Research Collection Development Research Collection: A core collection of reference books, journals, videos, institutional files, slides and reports is available for loan to IDRC staff, as well as for on-site consultation. Internet sites of interest to the development researcher are also collected in the "To the World" list of pointers on the Library Web site.

 Corporate Memory

IDRC Corporate Memory: The full record of IDRC project activities is available through RIMS' files and collections. All final technical reports of IDRC projects are housed on-site and are available for consultation in the Library. The Corporate Archive contains all documents, articles, books, speeches, videos, slides and software produced by IDRC and IDRC staff. These can be identified and located by searching BIBLIO. Selected videos and corporate publications are also available for purchase.

Digital Library Digital Library: All full text documents on the IDRC web site can be accessed through the Library catalogue by choosing "Full Text Avail.": Yes. Several lists of full text documents and books are also available for browsing; e.g.:

The Library's first digitization project was the Testing the Waters site.

Electronic access to thousands of photographic slides, mostly related to IDRC projects, is available through IMAGES, the IDRC digital slide bank.
